Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter reported that Henry Cavill was finished playing Superman for the DC Universe series of movies. Then shortly after that the news that Michael B. Jordan was being considered for the role started appearing, signalling that the DCU was moving in an entirely different direction. But just as the internet started reacting to the news, things got even more confusing.
First, Warner Bros.’ studio responded, saying that the news was false, and that Cavill wasn’t necessarily done with the role. Then Cavill’s manager jumped in, stating that “the cape is still in his closet”. Then Cavill himself took to Instagram, and well, his reaction is more than a little bizarre.
Appearing in a black T-shirt that says Krypton Lifting Team, while background classical music starring barking dogs plays, Cavill slowly lifts a Man of Steel doll. His caption only says “Today was interesting” with the hashtag #Superman. What this means is unclear. Cavill is well known for playing jokes and pranks through social media, and this may be another of those instances. What is known is that at the moment though, is that Cavill doesn’t have any upcoming appearances in any Warner Bros. movies as Superman. He even apparently turned down a cameo in next year’s Shazam due to scheduling conflicts. DCU does have Aquaman coming out this year, the aforementioned Shazam next year, and Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman and Joker films on the horizon, but as you can see Superman isn’t on the list. If Cavill does depart, he is most likely following Ben Affleck’s departure as Batman, although even that is not confirmed. As for Cavill’s future, well he does have the upcoming Netflix series The Witcher on the Horizon.
