The #MeToo movement has hit the headlines again closer home after Tanushree Dutta fired a fresh salvo at Nana Patekar over an alleged sexual assault incident during the shoot of ‘Horn Ok Pleassss’.

The actor has received a mixed response from the industry, with some accusing her claim to be mere attention seeking stunt, and others extending their support. Taapsee Pannu, who has become one of the poster girls for #WomenPower in Bollywood post her critically acclaimed movie, ‘Pink’, lashed out against those who were victim shaming.

Asked why she hadn’t presented her views on the social media on the matter, Taapsee said, “It’s just that I didn’t put up one tweet because I really don’t think in one tweet I can justify what I felt about the entire matter.”

Countering the arguments made against Tanushree which questioned why the actress kept mum on the issue for several years, she said “I won’t question her why didn’t she raise her voice then or why to raise the issue now. From whatever I have read, I think she did come out before, but her voice was silenced.”

“She has come back again now, and I don’t want to look at or doubt her intentions. It happened, and we have valid proof of the fact that it happened. Beyond this, it doesn’t even matter to me if she decides to raise her voice after 10 or 40 years,” she added.

Questioning the rationale of those calling this a publicity stunt, Taapsee said, “She is standing up and facing every question. I don’t understand why a woman will put herself and her family in that position revisiting the trauma. It’s not something you enjoy. Therefore, I really don’t doubt her intentions.”

“I really wish that this gives confidence to others who have probably gone through it or going through it or might end up encountering it in the future. I really wish that they get the strength to talk about it and not really get scared or shy away from it,” she added.

The controversy has also unfortunately given fuel to trolls who engage in victim shaming whenever a celebrity speaks out against such social issues. Asked if Taapsee fears being a target of such trolls, she said, “I never regret or sit back and think that I shouldn’t have said something. There are a lot of people who tell me that you shouldn’t say this or that or should keep quiet and I really think that I can either be true to my conscience or can live a fake life by staying quiet.”

Taapsee has always been upfront when it comes to her opinions and about the same, she said, “I might appease the larger audience, but I won’t be having a true life then. It’s very claustrophobic to live a life which is not really how you wanted to live. You are forcing yourself to be quite and behave like someone you are not. Either I choose to behave or live a life of someone else, or I choose to be myself and live the life the way I want.”

“Clear to my conscience, have a good sleep at night. I do what I felt is right. I don’t believe in poking nose in other people’s matters, but when it comes to matters related to me or something that affects me, I will not shy away for saying something I believe,” she concluded.
